Abstract. Every three months some studies are summarized that are relevant to a broad medical audience and that are published in one of the so-called "Big Five" journals: New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, Annals of Internal Medicine, British Medical Journal, and Journal of the American Medical Association.

Introducing PubMed

PubMed is a free and publicly available resource provided by the US National Library of Medicine. It covers the biomedical literature and, as the free version of MEDLINE, is highly authoritative.

Most journals indexed for PubMed are peer-reviewed or refereed, but peer review criteria and reviewer or referee qualifications vary. Check a journal's editorial information or ask the publisher about policy for specific journal titles.

Medline (via PubMed) is a database of citations and abstracts in the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, health care systems, allied health and preclinical sciences. It contains more than 26 million references from over 6,500 worldwide journals.

With Google Scholar, you can search by scholar preferences, easily navigate to related articles, and see how many times an article has been cited. Use search criteria to locate peer-reviewed articles.

If you find articles in Google Scholar, you would have to look up the journal the article is published in to find out whether they use peer review or not. When using library databases, there are options to restrict to peer review, either from the main search page or usually in the left hand column of the results page.
